Your 4WD Truck Has More Than an Engine and Transmission

Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs often add a transfer case, extra driveshafts and another differential. Many also use turbocharged engines. That’s more hardware that can need expensive repairs.

Diagnose before you authorize

Hard Shifting Doesn’t Always Mean a New Transmission

Manufacturers sometimes publish technical service bulletins describing known issues and repair procedures. For example, Ford bulletin 23-2123 covers harsh or delayed shifting on certain 2017–2020 F-150s with the 10R80 transmission, with fixes ranging from an adaptive-learning procedure to valve-body repair. GM bulletin 18-NA-355 addresses torque converter shudder on certain eight-speed transmissions. In both cases, the right repair depends on diagnosis. A bulletin is not a recall, and it doesn’t mean every truck will have the problem.

Before you approve a big repair

  1. 1Get a proper diagnosis, not just a symptom-based guess.
  2. 2Check for recalls, bulletins and any manufacturer coverage that still applies to your truck.
  3. 3If you have a protection plan, call before authorizing work. Many contracts require authorization first.
